Transformers: more than meets the eye

Transformers: more than meets the eyeAfter recently enjoying the new transformers movie in the cinemas, I started up the transformers video game with high expectations. As a kid, I was always a huge Transformers fan. I loved the transformers cars and the ever-lasting war between the Autobots and Decepticons. So when I first started the game, I was given a choice to play as either side. I decided first to play as the bad-guys, the Decepticons. I wasn’t impressed. A bunch of straightforward, bland levels involving shooting random humans and blowing up buildings, again and again and again and again.I decided that maybe the Autobots would be better, so I quickly restarted the game and changed sides. At first the Autobots were fun, as I became Autobot Bumblebee. Bumblebee changes into a hot rod, and I was free to drive around town at will.It was after I stopped mucking around and got on with the missions that I was hit with the same repetitive game play.In comparison though, the graphics were pretty stunning for an Xbox 360 game, and the controls were easy enough.Overall, if you like smash-’em games, with a little bit of free-range driving, then this if for you.

'Execute' corrupt officials

Gamers get to 'execute' corrupt officialsAn online game in which players can torture and kill corrupt officials that Chinese authorities set up to teach people about the perils of graft is a roaring success, state media said today. Incorruptible Fighter , developed by the government of east China's Zhejiang province, was launched just over a week ago and has been downloaded more than 100,000 times, the Southern Metropolitan Daily reported. I feel a great sense of achievement when I punish lots of evil officials, one gamer surnamed Sun was quoted as saying in the China Daily.A notice posted on the website today said it had crashed because of overwhelming demand. The game is currently under hardware and software updating as the online players have exceeded the limit of the server and the program, the notice said, promising it would soon be up and running again. The game, which lets players get ahead by killing officials by means of weapons, magic or torture, is based on well-known incidents taken from Chinese history. But the parallels in modern China of people struggling against seemingly insurmountable corruption are clear. To advance to a new level, the player must enter an Anti-Corruption College to be lectured in more detail about ancient cases, the Southeast Business newspaper said.Along the way internet vigilantes are rewarded for the capture, torture and killing of not just corrupt officials, but also their sons and daughters.Once the player has punished enough corrupt officials, graduating through successive layers of vice, he or she enters into a graft-free paradise. We want game players to have fun but also to learn about fighting corruption, folklore and history, said Qiu Yi, a local official in Ningbo, one of Zhejiang's most prosperous cities. Some experts have asked, however, if the game is targeted at the right people.

Review: Singstar 90s

Review: Singstar 90sWHEN Sony introduced the PlayStation 2 it was only a matter of months before the original PS was phased out and games disappeared from the shelves. The good news for PS2 players is there is no sign of that happening to their consoles now that the PS3 is here.In fact a survey in the US shows that in July the PS2 was still the console played by the most people, despite the launch of three new consoles in the past 12 months. That also mean developers are going to continue to develop games for PS2 and Sony is leading the way with titles like Singstar 90s.The Singstar series has hit a chord across all age groups. It cashes in on the popularity of karaoke and the seemingly universal dream of being a pop star. There are two versions of the game - the basic disc with new content for existing Singstar players and the full kit which includes two hand-held microphones for those who are venturing into home karaoke for the first time.Anybody who ever considered videogames anti-social obviously didn't take into account titles like this one.Singstar is a game many people are embarrassed to play on their own.Belting out a song in the shower in one thing, but solo karaoke is really only for professionals or singers who are so bad nobody wants to be in the same room as them. Even so, there is a solo game where your performance is scored according to how close you get to the original - and that is the cool part of the game. The technology recognises your pitch, tone and rhythm, and scores you depending on how well you perform. The better you sing, the more points you'll be awarded. But in reality Singstar is a good excuse for a party and the best fun is had competing with or against your friends.Singstar 90s offers you a line up of a string of hits from a decade ago and artists such as MC Hammer, Sir Mix-A-Lot, REM and the Spice Girls.Nothing screams 90s quite like The Cranberries' Zombie and Billy Ray Cyrus's Achy Breaky Heart and nothing will get you as pumped as everybody's party favourite Love Shack from the B-52s.
